NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City and the union representing lifeguards have agreed to an increase in pay for this upcoming summer.
New York City lifeguards will be bumped to $22 an hour, up from the previous rate of $19.50.
Those who worked in summer 2023 are eligible to receive a $1,000 bonus if they return this summer and work through the peak season.
With pool and beach season just around the corner, officials hope the pay increase and the bonus will lead to adequate staffing at the city’s eight public beaches and 53 outdoor pools.
Last summer, the city experienced a severe shortage of lifeguards.
