LEONIA, N.J. (PIX11) — Construction and power crews in Leonia, N.J., have been working all day and into the night to clean up damage from Wednesday night’s strong winds, which knocked down trees on Broad Avenue.
Across the state, thousands of people were without power Thursday.
“It’s been difficult,” said Leonia Police Chief Scott Tamagny. “We had to close some businesses. We’ve been trying to work with them as well because of the hazards of the area and the parking has been very difficult for them.”
Business owners certainly felt the effects. “Pretty slow,” said Celco Brando, who works on Broad Avenue. “Some people just came in, looked around. But I didn’t make any business at all.”
“This is a very rare and surprising event to see it like this,” said Leonia resident Ahmed Ahmmad, one of the few people we spotted walking on Broad Avenue. He woke up to find his neighbor’s large trampoline had blown all the way into his yard.
Perhaps the only one not bothered by the storm was Bodie, a Goldendoodle who seemed blissfully unaware.
“The dog’s been fine,” said owner Darryl Joo. “She doesn’t realize that the town is in destruction and that people don’t have power. But we’re handling it okay.”
