BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — The nightmare for tenants at 1915 Billingsley Terrace in the Bronx continues.

Many residents have moved back after the December 2023 collapse, but their living conditions don’t seem to be improving. Just this weekend, heavy rain flooded the lobby, and some units had water coming in through the ceiling.

Tenants said they feel the landlord does not understand how urgent and important it is to get this building fixed. And that they deserve to live decent lives.

Jacqueline Tomlinson and another tenant were sweeping out water from their flooded building lobby in the Bronx on Saturday.

Rainfall poured through the ceiling lights during the heavy rainstorm. For Tomlinson, there was no escape from the rain.

“When I opened the closet, it was pouring in there,” said Tomlinson, who has lived at the apartment building for 38 years.

She was one of the more than 100 residents displaced after the building partially collapsed on Dec. 11. Coming back to the place she has called home for 38 years and raised her three children has not been a pleasant experience.

“We have not had gas since January,” said Tomlinson, adding that she cooks in a little “burner.”

Other tenants, like Betriz Arias, said she packed her belongings and was ready to go, thinking the building would collapse again.

The Department of Buildings issued the landlord another violation for failing to maintain this property at 1915 Billingsley Terrace. The Legal Aid Society is suing the owners of this building.

“There are over 200 violations in the building and in common areas inside people’s apartments. There are an additional 12 DOB violations,” said Zoe Kheyman, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society.

Resident Mery Suarez states she has to devise creative ways to live a little bit more comfortably.

“I have to put black tape on the windows to stop the cold air from coming in,” she said in Spanish.

According to the Legal Aid Society, the landlord started to make some repairs, but the building was in such bad shape that it was too late.

PIX11 News reached out to the company that owns this building, but we have not heard back.
