FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (PIX11) – The suspect accused of killing police officer Jonathan Diller in Queens on Monday had been pulled over for being illegally parked at a bus stop, according to the NYPD.
Shots rang out around 6 p.m. near Mott Avenue and Smith Place. There were two people in the gray SUV that was pulled over, according to authorities.
Diller told the passenger to get out when they pulled out a gun and shot the 31-year-old officer below the vest in the stomach, police said.
Diller’s partner shot the suspect in the back, according to authorities. Despite his injuries, Diller was able to grab the suspect’s gun, police said.
The officer succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, according to authorities. The suspect is still at the hospital after surgery, police said, along with the driver of the SUV.
The shooting happened just two blocks away from the 101st Precinct. The suspect was arrested on gun charges in April of last year, and was back out on the streets, according to authorities.
