Snow may be heading NYC’s way this weekend: ‘Stay tuned’

A storm heading towards New York City could bring wintry precipitation to the metro area this weekend — with the potential for snow, according to the National Weather Service. But don’t break out the sleds just yet.

Meteorologist David Stark said it’s still too early for specifics on what kind of precipitation and how much of it this weekend’s storm could bring.

“We are still talking about five days out, but there's still a lot of uncertainty on the exact [precipitation] types and amounts,” Stark said on Tuesday. “It's possible that it could be mixed with some sleet or some rain at times.”

The system meteorologists are keeping an eye on is currently over the North Pacific, and is expected to move onshore tonight, eventually making its way across the country, Stark said.

“That's really where the uncertainty lies, because that track is very important. If it ends up tracking a little bit further south and then it could be a little colder — that could favor a little more, wintry [precipitation] near the coast,” Stark said. “But if it keeps on showing what we've been seeing now … it may be too close to the coastline itself to support an all snow event in the New York City area.”

As of Tuesday Friday’s temperature is expected to be in the upper 30s, dipping into the lower 30s at night. Saturday is expected to be warmer, with the high at nearly 40, and lows in the low to middle 30s. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to stay in the middle to upper 30s.

Winds are expected to pick up Saturday night, going up 25 miles per hour with wind gusts up to 40 or 45 miles per hour, and dying back down by the end of the day Sunday.

The storm is expected to reach the city Saturday night into Sunday, coming to an end early Sunday afternoon.

Last year, New York was historically snowless, with only 2.3 inches of snowfall in Central Park, beating out 1913 for the least snowy year with 3.4 inches, according to the National Weather Service. This winter hasn’t seen a lot of snow yet so far either, but Stark said there’s still plenty of time.

For now, he suggested New Yorkers keep an eye on the weather heading into this weekend.

“Just stay tuned. Be aware that there's a storm system potential for Saturday night and early Sunday and keep on checking back with the weather here as we get the next few days. And we should have a lot better information, more information then,” Stark said.
