A 62-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly struck and killed a 10-year-old girl who was crossing the street in Brooklyn, police said on Wednesday.
The NYPD charged Isaac Karczag with failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to obey traffic devices and failure to exercise due care in connection with the incident. The arrest followed an investigation by the department's Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
Karczag was driving a 2022 Buick Enclave SUV westbound on Wallabout Street when he crossed the solid double-yellow lines into the eastbound lane before making a left turn onto Franklin Avenue, According to officials. That’s when he struck Yitty Wertzberger, who was in the crosswalk and had the right of way, police said.
Karczag remained on the scene and was eventually taken into custody, according to the NYPD. His attorney information was not immediately available.
Police continue to investigate the incident, officials said.
After the crash, street safety advocates pointed out that the intersection where Wertzberger was killed lacked what's known as "daylighting," or the removal of parking spaces near intersections, and had limited visibility for drivers. Mayor Eric Adams vowed last year to remove parking spots from 1,000 intersections annually.
