MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Over 150 people were arrested at NYU amid pro-Palestinian protests Monday night, according to the NYPD.

An NYU spokesperson claimed that protesters were behaving in a “disorderly, disruptive and antagonizing” manner during the protest at Gould Plaza. The NYPD told PIX11 News it only stepped in after NYU sent them a written request.

Demonstrators were demanding that NYU divest from weapons manufacturers and end the school’s relationship with Tel Aviv University. Some faculty were seen joining in on the protests.

Columbia University, which has also seen a wave of pro-Palestinian protests on campus, announced Tuesday that most classes will be held hybrid for the rest of the spring semester. It comes after security was increased amid the protests, including only being allowed on campus with a valid student ID.

More than 100 students have been suspended by Columbia after they were arrested during protests held on the campus last Thursday. Faculty members called for the students to be unsuspended.

The NYPD said it will remain off campus unless the universities call for assistance.
