NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — The MTA will temporarily axe overtime pay for city transit workers due to budget shortfalls, according to reports.

Overtime in the agency’s first quarter exceeded the allotted amount by more than $72 million, according to documents obtained by the Daily News

The upcoming overtime change also requires approval of any unplanned overtime. The new overtime mandate is expected to slow existing repair and maintenance projects, but it will not impact service, according to the agency.

Last year, overtime costs at the MTA reached $1.3 billion, an increase from $1.1 billion in 2021, according to Empire Center.
