CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) – A bodega worker was fatally shot Monday afternoon over a cigar in Brooklyn, according to the NYPD.
The incident happened on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, police said. A patron asked 37-year-old Nazim Berry to buy him a Black & Mild cigar, and when Berry refused, a fight broke out, according to authorities.
Police said the suspect allegedly left the store and came back with a gun. The fight spilled out into the street, where Berry was shot in the head, according to authorities.
Surveillance video shows a suspect running down the street. No arrests have been made so far as police search for the suspect, according to authorities.
Friends of Berry told PIX11 News he was beloved in the neighborhood.
“I knew that it had to be over something stupid because I know his heart,” said one resident. “Nazim is proud when he’s over here on the corner to work, and love everybody, and help who he could help.”
“He’s always willing to help. He’s worked in the store here for quite some time. I don’t know how it managed to happen,” said another resident.
The store had working surveillance cameras and captured the incident, according to authorities. Police describe the suspect as last seen wearing a gold and black sweater.
