MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Two more men were arrested overnight Thursday in connection to the attack on police officers in Times Square, according to the NYPD.
Yohenry Brito, 24, and Jandry Barros, 21, were taken into custody in Midtown on Wednesday. It comes after five men who were also arrested in the attack were released after being charged with assaulting a police officer.
The incident happened in front of 220 West 42nd St. around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to the NYPD. A group of men, mostly migrants, attacked an NYPD lieutenant and an officer after they asked them to move along, according to authorities.
The officers were punched and kicked repeatedly by the eight men, police said.
Republican U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis called for the deportation of migrants who commit crimes, with future immigration applications denied.
Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said it is worth revisiting.
“If someone commits a crime against an officer in NY and they are not here legally, definitely worth checking into,” Hochul said.
NYPD officials also expressed frustration with bail reform and its impact on criminal justice in New York City.
New York does not have the power to deport criminals – only the feds do. There’s a bipartisan bid to change removal rules.
