As part of the plea agreement between the State of Israel and ultra-orthodox billionaire Levi Leviev, an indictment was submitted to the Tel Aviv District Court against the diamond company owned by Leviev and against the CEO Reuven Shmuelov. This is according to the report today (Sunday) in 'Globes'.
According to the settlement, the Toda diamond company will be convicted of smuggling and money laundering, and will be sentenced to a fine and forfeiture of NIS 25 million. Shamalov will confess and be convicted of smuggling and money laundering, and will be sentenced to 18 months in prison and a fine and forfeiture of NIS 280,000. So according to 'Globes'.
On behalf of Lev Leviev, it was stated in response: "After a thorough and lengthy investigation, during which Mr. Leviev's business conduct was examined, it was found that there was no fault in it, and he and his family were cleared of all suspicion. Mr. Leviev now wishes to dedicate himself to restoring peace to his family and his business. The LLD company will honor and fulfill its part in the settlement the argument".
As I recall and as reported in 'Kirar HaShabbat', a little over a month ago Leviev arrived in Israel after several years in Moscow, and was interrogated by Lahab 433. Hours after his arrival in Israel it was announced that he had reached a plea agreement.
The "Black Diamond" affair deals with the suspicion of a huge smuggling of diamonds, in the amount of about NIS 300 million. According to the suspicion, an employee of one of Leviev's factories in Russia allegedly smuggled a large amount of diamonds into Israel. During the investigation of the affair, a 42-year-old employee of the diamond company LLD owned by Leviev, an accountant in the company and a mother of three, fell to her death near the Diamond Exchange complex in Ramat Gan. Her family members claimed that it was a murder and not a suicide.
Over the years, the police asked to interrogate Leviev in the case, but he did not return to Israel. Now, upon his landing from Russia, the police detective approached him and gave him a summons for questioning. As mentioned, he was interrogated by the police and signed a plea agreement and now the indictment has been filed.
According to the information revealed in 'Globes', the company owned by Babev will pay a fine of millions of shekels as part of the plea agreement. The attorney's office refused to address the substance of the statements to 'Globes', and only said in response to 'Globes' that "Following inquiries from reporters, we will clarify that Mr. Leviev informed the enforcement authorities of the date of his return to Israel, and that prior to his arrival it was made clear to him that the question of his arrest or the conditions of his release would be considered by the police in accordance with developments in the investigation."
